TRANSCRIPTIONS

Listed below are transcriptions of the original drafts of The Dark, the drafts are housed in the John McGahern Collections at the National University of Ireland, Galway. During this project, I was able to gain digital access to his manuscripts and began notating the most notable discrepancies between the drafts. While reading through them, I noticed the young Mahoney's interactions with females resulted in some of the most heavily edited scenes. As a result, I've narrowed in on these scenes to better trace the way McGahern recharacterizes his female characters and the way young Mahoney interacts with them.
